Being a next-door neighbour, IIT Madras sought a strategic partnership with VHS. While VHS will manage the clinical arm of the hospital, IIT Madras will concentrate on academics and research. Planned funding will place VHS as one of the best hospitals in the country and an excellent centre for clinical research. In a sense, the model parallels the MIT-Harvard medical research program.
Sankara Nethralaya is the brainchild of a brilliant ophthalmologist Dr Badrinath. True to its name, which translates as “The temple of the eye”, the hospital has a footfall of more than 1500 patients daily. With a revenue of over $100 million, SN, as it is affectionately called in the city of Chennai, is one of the top four ophthalmic hospitals in the world.
