The Department of Medical Sciences & Technology aims to be at the forefront of interdisciplinary research, blending engineering, medicine, and life sciences to develop solutions to some of the most pressing medical challenges of our time. With the introduction of our PhD program, we are opening doors for aspiring researchers to explore uncharted territories in medical technology.

The Department of Medical Sciences & Technology at IIT Madras, in collaboration with Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER), has launched an MD-PhD Dual Degree program to cultivate ‘Physician-Scientists’. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between medical and technological domains, fostering innovations for scalable, accessible, and quality healthcare. A memorandum of understanding was signed to formalize this partnership, which will focus on clinical, interdisciplinary, and translational research.

 The program will produce research scientists leading India’s quest for self-sufficiency in medicine and health, operational from the next academic year. Postgraduates from SRIHER, after their second year, can apply to IIT Madras’s Department of Medical Sciences and Technology to pursue their PhD. Selected candidates will be mentored by faculty from both institutions, with a year spent at IIT Madras for coursework, funded by SRIHER.
