On September 20, 2024, the Shankar Center of Excellence for Diabetes Research (SCoEDR) was inaugurated at the Department of Medical Sciences and Technology, IIT Madras in collaboration with Emory University, Georgia. The Center is funded by Mr. Subramonian Shankar, CEO and Founder, AmZetta Technologies, LLC.

 

Event Overview:

The Chief Guest for the event was Mr. Chris Hodges, U.S. Consul General, Chennai. Representatives from Emory University graced the event along with Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, faculty members of the department, and students. Key highlights of the event included:

  • Welcome Address by Prof. Anubama Rajan, Head of SCoEDR.
  • Dean’s Address by Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula, Dean of Alumni & Corporate Relations.
  • Director’s Address by Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras.
  • Chief Guest’s Address by Mr. Chris Hodges.
  • Talk on Diabetes by Dr. V. Mohan, Chairperson, Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre.
  • Special Address by the Emory University team
  • Special Address by Prof. Krishna Kumar, Institute Professor, IIT Madras.
  • Announcement of Lakshmi and Subramonian Shankar Fellowship Beneficiaries

Key objectives of the Shankar Center of Excellence for Diabetes Research (SCoEDR):

  1. Addressing the High Prevalence of Diabetes: The center will investigate the socio-economic, dietary, and genetic factors contributing to India’s high rate of diabetes. The goal is to develop prevention and management strategies that cater to the specific needs of the population.
  2. Innovating in Treatment and Management: Through research and collaborations, the center aims to develop effective and culturally relevant diabetes treatments. It also plans to bring these innovations to market, making them accessible and impactful.
  3. Contributing to Global Diabetes Research: While focusing on India’s challenges, the center will also contribute to global diabetes research by sharing insights and findings that could benefit the international community.

The Shankar Center of Excellence for Diabetes Research is set to advance the understanding and treatment of diabetes, enhancing both local and global efforts in diabetes management.

On August 13th, 2024, the Department of Medical Sciences & Technology at IIT Madras witnessed the inauguration of its cutting-edge Anatomy Lab. The lab was inaugurated by Smt. Parminder Chopra, Chairperson and Managing Director of Power Finance Corporation Ltd, in the presence of Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, along with other distinguished dignitaries, faculty, and students.

This state-of-the-art facility was established with financial support from Power Finance Corporation Ltd under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. The Anatomy Lab is a significant addition to the department, bringing in advanced technology to enhance the learning experience for students.

The lab is equipped with modern tools such as a Virtual Dissection Table, Visualization Models of the Human Anatomy, an Ultrasound Simulator, Biomotion Capture systems, and Synthetic Cadavers. These tools collectively enable a high level of interactive and immersive learning, providing students with an unparalleled opportunity to explore human anatomy in a realistic and detailed manner.

This new facility marks an important milestone for the Department of Medical Sciences & Technology, reinforcing its commitment to leveraging the latest technology for educational excellence. The lab will undoubtedly serve as a cornerstone for medical education at IIT Madras, fostering a deeper understanding of human anatomy through innovative, hands-on learning experiences.

The Department of Medical Sciences & Technology at IIT Madras, in collaboration with Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER), has launched an MD-PhD Dual Degree program to cultivate ‘Physician-Scientists’. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between medical and technological domains, fostering innovations for scalable, accessible, and quality healthcare. A memorandum of understanding was signed to formalize this partnership, which will focus on clinical, interdisciplinary, and translational research.

 The program will produce research scientists leading India’s quest for self-sufficiency in medicine and health, operational from the next academic year. Postgraduates from SRIHER, after their second year, can apply to IIT Madras’s Department of Medical Sciences and Technology to pursue their PhD. Selected candidates will be mentored by faculty from both institutions, with a year spent at IIT Madras for coursework, funded by SRIHER.
